Couples therapy is very challenging not only for the couple but for the therapist as well. Two people with their own individual life stories come together in a relationship that in an of itself is a complex web of feelings and experiences. Often by the time the couple enters therapy anger and resentment is at an all time high. Conversely, communication is often at an all time low. Thus, ensuring a safe emotional environment for the couple to work through their challenges is a necessity. Emotions will be highly charged and painful truths are often revealed; however couples therapy is not a place for fighting. It is a place for the couple to learn skills of active listening to their partner and to more effectively communicate during high emotional arousal.
